Introduction to Dr. Sugata Bose:
Prof. Sugata Bose is the Gardiner Professor of History at Harvard University and the grandnephew of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. He has also served as the Director of Harvard’s South Asia Institute.
Prof. Bose was educated at Presidency College, Kolkata, and the University of Cambridge, where he earned his Ph.D. His scholarship has significantly contributed to a deeper understanding of colonial and post-colonial political economy, the relationship between rural and urban domains, inter-religious arenas of travel, trade, and imagination across the Indian Ocean. His expertise extends to Indian ethical discourses, political philosophy, and economic thought.
He has authored over 22 books, including the twelve-volume Collected Works of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, which he jointly edited with Sisir Kumar Bose.
Prof. Bose is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship and delivered the prestigious G.M. Trevelyan Lecture at the University of Cambridge. In 2015, he was honored with the Rabindra Puraskar, the highest literary award in Bengal. He has also served as the Chair of the Presidency Mentor Group, advising on the rejuvenation of Presidency University as a world-class center of excellence, and as a member of the Nalanda Governing Board.
From 2014 to 2019, Prof. Bose served as a Member of Parliament, representing the Jadavpur Constituency in Bengal in the 16th Lok Sabha. During this tenure, he was a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs.
