ગાંધી જયંતીના અવસરે, શુક્રવાર, ૨ ઑક્ટોબર, ૨૦૨૬ના રોજ સાબરમતી આશ્રમ ખાતે સર્વધર્મ પ્રાર્થનાનું આયોજન કરવામાં આવશે. આ પ્રસંગે પ્રતિષ્ઠિત સમાજસેવિકા, લેખિકા, જાણીતાં ડિઝાઇનર, હસ્તકલા ક્ષેત્રનાં અગ્રણી કાર્યકર તથા ગ્રામ્ય કારીગરોના સશક્તિકરણ માટે કાર્યરત સંસ્થા દસ્તકારના સ્થાપકોમાંના એક, શ્રી લૈલા તૈયબજી ઉપસ્થિત રહેશે. પ્રાર્થના બાદ માનનીય મુખ્ય અતિથિ પ્રસંગોચિત સંક્ષિપ્ત ઉદ્બોધન આપશે.

આ કાર્યક્રમમાં આપ પરિવારજનો, સહકર્મીઓ તથા મિત્રો સાથે પધારી કાર્યક્રમની શોભા વધારશો તેવી હાર્દિક વિનંતી.

પરિચય : શ્રી લૈલા તૈયબજી

શ્રી લૈલા તૈયબજીનો જન્મ વર્ષ ૧૯૪૭માં દિલ્હીમાં થયો હતો. તેમના પિતા શ્રી બદરુદ્દીન તૈયબજી ભારતીય સનદી અધિકારી અને રાજદૂત હતા તથા અલીગઢ મુસ્લિમ યુનિવર્સિટીના કુલપતિ પણ રહી ચૂક્યા હતા. તેમનાં માતા શ્રી સુરૈયા તૈયબજી જાણીતા ભારતીય કલાકાર હતાં. યુવા વયે તેમણે સ્વતંત્ર ભારતના રાષ્ટ્રધ્વજની રચનામાં અશોકચક્રનો સમાવેશ કરીને મહત્ત્વપૂર્ણ યોગદાન આપ્યું હતું. શ્રી લૈલા તૈયબજીએ દહેરાદૂન, વડોદરા અને જાપાનમાં શિક્ષણ મેળવ્યું હતું.

શ્રી લૈલા તૈયબજીએ પોતાની વ્યાવસાયિક કારકિર્દીની શરૂઆત કચ્છની પરંપરાગત હસ્તકલાનું દસ્તાવેજીકરણ કરીને કરી હતી. આ અનુભવથી તેમને ગ્રામ્ય કારીગરોને શહેરી બજારો અને ગ્રાહકો સાથે જોડવાની પ્રેરણા મળી. આ વિચારને વિશાળ અને વ્યાપક ફલક પર સાકાર કરવા માટે છ બહેનોએ સાથે મળીને વર્ષ ૧૯૮૧માં ‘દસ્તકાર’ નામે સંસ્થાની સ્થાપના કરી હતી. શ્રી લૈલા તૈયબજી પણ તે સ્થાપક બહેનોમાંનાં એક હતાં. આ સંસ્થાના ઘડતર તથા વિકાસમાં તેમની મહત્ત્વની ભૂમિકા રહી છે. હાલમાં તેઓ આ સંસ્થાનાં અધ્યક્ષ છે.

ભારતના સ્વતંત્રતા સંગ્રામ વખતે મહાત્મા ગાંધીએ જે મૂલ્યોને હસ્તકલા સાથે સાંકળ્યાં હતાં, તે મૂલ્યો સાથે શ્રી લૈલા તૈયબજી સમગ્ર ભારતમાં ખાદી ચળવળ સાથે પણ ગાઢ રીતે સંકળાયેલાં રહ્યાં છે. તેમનાં નેતૃત્વ હેઠળ દસ્તકારે ભારતના હસ્તકલા ક્ષેત્રમાં નવી તકો ઊભી કરી છે. તેમણે કારીગરો માટે બજારો વિકસાવવા, તેમની કુશળતા વધારવા અને ટકાઉ રોજગારીની તકો ઊભી કરવા માટે વ્યાપક કાર્ય કર્યું છે. તેમનાં પ્રયત્નોથી દેશભરના અનેક કારીગર જૂથોને સહાય અને પ્રોત્સાહન મળ્યાં છે. ચિકનકારી, આરીકામ, આભલાકામ, લંબાણી હસ્તકલા તેમજ કચ્છ અને કાશ્મીરની પરંપરાગત હસ્તકલાના પ્રચાર અને વિકાસમાં પણ તેમણે નોંધપાત્ર યોગદાન આપ્યું છે. આ દિશામાં તેમના તમામ પ્રયાસોનાં આયોજન અને અમલ મહિલાઓ દ્વારા અને મહિલાઓ થકી થયાં છે, એ ખાસ નોંધવું રહ્યું, તે ખરા અર્થમાં ગાંધીજીના સ્વપ્નને સાકાર કરવા બરાબર છે.

હસ્તકલા અને કારીગરોના કલ્યાણ તથા હિત માટેના તેમના અવિરત પ્રયાસોને માન્યતા આપતાં તેમને અનેક સન્માનો અને પુરસ્કારોથી નવાજવામાં આવ્યાં છે. વર્ષ ૨૦૧૪માં તેમનું નામ ‘લિમ્કા બુક ઑફ રેકોર્ડ્સ’માં “પર્સન ઑફ ધ યર” તરીકે નોંધાયું હતું. વર્ષ ૨૦૧૨માં તેમને ‘પદ્મશ્રી’થી સન્માનિત કરવામાં આવ્યાં હતાં. વર્ષ ૨૦૦૩માં તેઓ Aid to Artisans Preservation of Craft Award પ્રાપ્ત કરનાર પ્રથમ એશિયન મહિલા બન્યાં હતાં.

શ્રી લૈલા તૈયબજી હસ્તકલા, ડિઝાઇન અને સામાજિક વિષયો પર સતત લખતાં રહ્યાં છે અને રાષ્ટ્રીય તથા આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય મંચો પર કારીગરોના પ્રશ્નો, હિતો અને અધિકારોનું પ્રતિનિધિત્વ કરે છે. તેઓ ‘Threads and Voices – Behind the Indian Textile Tradition’ (૨૦૦૭) પુસ્તકનાં લેખક પણ છે.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Friday, 2 October 2026, an All-Religion Prayer will be held at Sabarmati Ashram in the presence of Ms. Laila Tyabji, a distinguished social worker, writer, renowned designer, pioneer in the field of handicrafts, and one of the founders of ‘Dastkar’, an organisation dedicated to empowering rural artisans.

Following the prayer, Ms. Tyabji will deliver a brief address on the occasion.

Introduction: Ms. Laila Tyabji

Ms. Laila Tyabji was born in Delhi in 1947. Her father, Mr. Badruddin Tyabji, was an Indian civil servant, diplomat, and Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. Her mother, Ms. Suraiya Tyabji, was a renowned Indian artist who, at a young age, contributed to the design of the national flag of independent India by incorporating the Ashoka Chakra. Ms. Laila Tyabji received her education in Dehradun, Vadodara, and Japan.

She began her professional journey by documenting the traditional handicrafts of Kutch. This experience inspired her to connect rural artisans with urban markets and consumers. To realise this vision, she played an important role in the establishing ‘Dastkar’, country’s rich craft heritage in 1981.

Ms. Laila Tyabji has also been closely associated with the khadi movement across India and with the values that Mahatma Gandhi associated with handicrafts during India’s struggle for freedom.

Under Ms. Laila Tyabji’s leadership, Dastkar created new opportunities in India’s handicrafts sector. She has worked extensively to develop markets for artisans, enhance their skills, and create sustainable employment opportunities. Her efforts have supported and encouraged numerous artisan groups across India. She has also made significant contributions to the promotion and development of traditional crafts such as Chikankari, Aari embroidery, mirror work, Lambani handicrafts, and the traditional crafts of Kutch and Kashmir. It would not be out of order to reiterate that her entire effort has been anchored, choreographed and implemented by and through women only teams. This indeed is putting Gandhiji’s dreams into action.

For her tireless efforts towards the welfare and interests of handicrafts and artisans, she has received numerous honours and recognitions. In 2014, her name was recorded in the ‘Limca Book of Records’ as the “Person of the Year.” She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2012. In 2003, she became the first Asian woman to receive the Aid to Artisans Preservation of Craft Award.

The life and work of Ms. Laila Tyabji have been dedicated to preserving India’s rich handicraft traditions, providing artisans with dignified livelihoods and employment opportunities, and bringing India’s cultural heritage to the world.

Ms. Laila Tyabji continues to write extensively on handicrafts, design, and social issues, and represents the concerns and rights of artisans on national and international platforms. She is also the author of the book Threads and Voices – Behind the Indian Textile Tradition (2007).
