Archival and Editorial Projects on Gandhian Literature

The Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust (SAPMT), Ahmedabad, is undertaking three important scholarly projects related to the documentation, editing, and publication of Gandhian archival material.

Applications are invited from young scholars and researchers for positions as Research Associates / Research Assistants to assist the editorial team working on these projects.

Projects

1. Letters to Gandhi – Compilation, editing, and annotation of letters written to Mahatma Gandhi from India and abroad.
2. Mahadevbhai Desai Diaries (1938–1942) – Preparation and publication of the remaining unpublished volumes of the diaries of Gandhiji’s close associate and secretary.
3. Gujarati Volumes (83–100) of the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi – Completion of the remaining Gujarati volumes of this landmark publication.

Responsibilities

• Conducting archival research and verification of primary sources
• Maintaining textual accuracy and integrity
• Preparing annotations and explanatory notes
• Deciphering handwritten manuscripts using OCR and digital tools
• Cross-referencing materials with existing archival collections and publications
• Assisting in the editorial preparation of texts for publication

Eligibility

1. Candidates with an academic background in History, Political Science, Literature (English / Gujarati / Hindi), Journalism, Library and Archival Studies, Digital Humanities, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.
2. Strong research ability, attention to textual detail, and an interest in historical sources are essential.
3. Proficiency in Gujarati and Hindi is compulsory. Knowledge of English will be an advantage.
4. Recent graduates as well as early-career researchers are encouraged to apply.
